I am often asked what type of sunglasses a person should get, so here is a quick guide to what the most commonly used tinted lenses are for:
- Grey
Grey lenses are good for general light and glare reduction. It just makes everything darker. This is the most popular and commonly used tint. - Brown
Brown lenses enhance definition and contrast by increasing yellow tones. It tends to make thing too bright for some, but is excellent for foggy conditions as well as for people with reduced vision due to age or disease. - Green or G15
Green lenses have a similar effect to grey, but it alters the colour of the objects that you look at. This tends to lead to discomfort and confusion. This is the least preferred colour.
All of these basic tints are also available in a polarized form.
Polarized lenses work like 3D in that it causes increased depth perception, reduces brightness and totally eliminates glare. The fact that glare is totally gone is the main reason people choose polarized lenses over non polarized lenses. It is excellent for fishing because it cuts out surface glare on the water allowing a totally clear view of the fish in the water.
The main disadvantage of polarized lenses is eyestrain, headaches and nausea usually associated with long term wear.
